Sections / Signatures

Binding together more than about 64 pages can become unwieldy — the thick set of pages becomes difficult to fold and staple, and page creep also becomes an issue, as the inner pages push out at the center.

For this reason, longer books are often divided into sections, with each section bound individually and then combined at the end.

For example, say you have a 48 page zine and you are printing 4up, and you want signatures of 16 pages. The result will still be imposed onto 6 sheets (printed front and back), but the pages are arranged differently. Pages 1-16 of your zine will be imposed as you would normally impose a booklet, on the first 2 sheets. Then pages 17-32 on the next two sheets, and finally pages 33-48 on the last two sheets.
