Layout Department helps you make the print files for books and zines — a process called imposition.
- First, Download the app to your computer, if you haven’t already, and install and open it. If you’re new to making your own books and zines, start with the free version. It probably has everything you need, and you can always upgrade to the paid license later if you want.
- To make a book or zine, you need a PDF of all your pages in order. It’s great if your pages of the PDF are the same size you want them to print, but it’s not totally necessary.
- Choose the Sheet Size you’re printing on — this is the paper you’re putting into your printer.
- If that looks good, you can press Export and get your imposed file.
- Print the file double sided, fold it in half, staple or sew to bind, and you have a book/zine!
But you might want to do more…
- If you’re going to print more than 2 pages on each side of the sheet, then pick how many pages will print on each side of the sheet. This has to do with your Page Size of the eventual book/zine you’re making.
- If you want a different layout, you can shift the binding from the side to the top, or change the orientation of the book from portrait to landscape.
- Change the format from Booklet to Perfect Bound or Magic Zine
- You can use the Spectrolite Integration to open the imposed file in Spectrolite to do color separation for risograph printing.
