Layout Department
New software for laying out books and zines. Drag and drop PDFs to make the imposed print files for making books, zines and booklets. A tool for artist publishers, small printshops, and people who like making print publications.
Made by ANEMONE, the makers of Spectrolite.
Start with your PDF with all the pages of your book/zine/booklet in a row: Drag and drop it onto the app, choosing paper size you'll be printing on (Letter, Legal, Ledger, A4, A3). You can lay out with 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 pages per side of the paper you're printing on, and also select other settings that determine the shape of the book. Push the Export button in the top right to get your print files.
Download
This version of the app is free and has what you need to make your PDFs into layouts that you can print. We plan to add a paid version with even more features in the future.
Are you on your phone? Don't download the desktop app to your phone, instead: email yourself a link to download later
All your PDF files are processed locally on your computer, and they are not uploaded to the internet.
This is new
EARLY DAYS! If you're seeing this, you're here in the very beginning. Thank you!! There will be a new app icon and color scheme! The app is under construction: it will change and there is a lot to be built.
There will almost certainly be a few hiccups along the way, so we've built in bug reporting that automatically sends us error logs (not your PDF file) when you see a bug alert pop-up. (In preferences, you'll see an option to turn this off if you need to.) When a bug happens, you'll also see an option to add a note about what you were doing when the problem occurred — if you have time to add more context, this can really help us track down problems and fix them. (Also you'll have an opportunity to add your email where we can reach you, if we have any questions as we're trying to track down the problem.)
Thanks for trying it out and let us know if you have suggestions or run into problems.
We will have how-to content for book making and using the app. In the meantime, the Spectrolite book layout how-to could be helpful.
Pairs well with Spectrolite
This new layout app takes the core of what we (Adam Greenhall and Amelia Greenhall, collaborating as ANEMONE) have learned from building zine imposition in Spectrolite, makes it even better and faster.
If you include printer's marks (like center marks) in the PDF you make with this layout app, then put the file in to Spectrolite to for color separation, Spectrolite will detect that marks came from this layout app and put the marks on the appropriate color layer(s).
Right now, Spectrolite's layouts section can do some of what this app does. Eventually, we plan to remove the imposition layouts entirely from Spectrolite, so you'll use this layout app for imposing and then send the print files to Spectrolite for color separation.
