Content Shift
Content Shift helps you move the content in relation to the binding — you can move it towards or away from the center fold/center binding.
This is for when you want to move your content of your page away from the binding, and you don’t want to (or can’t easily) include this in your layout file. No problem – just use the page shift tool to specify how far to move. You can use a negative number to move the content towards the binding.
Here are some places this might come in handy:
- You’re making a perfect bound book and want extra unprinted space near the spine so that content doesn’t get hard to see in the part of the binding near the glue, where the pages can’t open very far.
- You’re working in a program like Google Docs that doesn’t let you set different margins for even and odd pages, but you want to have more space on the inner or outer margins.
- You’re making a book you’re planning to staple or stab-bind on the side, and want extra room for the binding area.
Heads up: this tool uses millimeters, even if your units Settings are otherwise in inches. (Fractional inches are just too wonky to deal with!)
You might also want to use Creep to shift the content on the page to account for when the thickness of the folded paper at the binding shifts the position of the pages themselves.
